What is a Hokie?

Virginia Tech Memorials
Today, Virginia Tech students returned to their classes; one week after the horrible tragedy that reigned down upon our campus. We continue to mourn our Hokie brothers and sisters while beginning the healing process.

Hokie Hope surrounds our community. Not just the physical community of Blacksburg, but the Virginia Tech community, it’s more than 200,000 alumni worldwide, and our friends and family. We are humbled by the support we’ve received from other universities, organizations, states, governments and other countries. If the the world didn’t know what a Hokie was before, surely it knows now.

A Hokie is not just a mascot. A Hokie feels the tragic loss for our fallen brothers and sisters. A Hokie is strong enough to know that it is okay to fall to our knees, hold our faces in our hands and cry. A Hokie is strong enough to know when it is time to begin to heal. A Hokie is strong enough to stand back up and carry on, but never forget. A Hokie is so much more … more than I can list here. But once a Hokie, always a Hokie, and right now, there are 32 Hokies watching over us. Let’s make them proud and honor their lives by living our as best we can.

God Bless,
Gary Cope
