Questions Emerge Following Redshirting of Tyrod Taylor

Most logical Virginia Tech Hokies football fans realize that redshirting Tyrod Taylor is in the best interest of the team and for T-mobile. There are far too many question marks on the offense this season to run a two-quarterback system; not to mention the fact that if you did, you’d essentially be wasting a year of eligibility for Taylor. Sitting him this season was the smartest move … for now.

The first question people asked when they heard the news was, “Who will be the backup?” The answer is Cory Holt, who will have to make the switch back to QB after spending the spring and most of this fall as a wide receiver. Holt is a fifth-year senior and knows the system, so hopefully the adjustment won’t be too traumatic.

The second question people ask is, “What happens if Sean goes down with a serious injury?” Well, that’s where things get tricky. If it happens early in the season, say the first four or five games, QB coach Mike O’Cain said that he’d probably take the redshirt off Taylor. But what if Sean goes down in game six? What about game eight? Would it be worth burning a year of TT’s eligibility? It all depends on the type of season the Hokies are having.

In Kyle Tucker’s blog, Taylor was quoted as saying, “Coach (O’Cain) talked about that in the meeting and we said no later than game four or five, because after that you’d just be playing half a season, basically.â€

But … what … if? Look at Tech’s schedule, it’s not inconceivable that the Hokies could be looking at a 6-0 start if everyone stays healthy. If the Hokies are making a serious push for another ACC title, as expected, and Glennon goes down [knocking on wood], do you hand the keys to a contender over to a fifth-year QB? Holt does have a strong arm and has very good speed (he runs a 4.5 40). Let’s not forget that two seasons ago, he was a serious contender for the starting QB job before being sidelined with a hand injury.

Glennon, on the other hand, has missed just one game to injury in his four years of playing (he redshirted his sophomore year), so on the surface it would appear that he’s a durable. Lord knows he’s taken more than his fair share of hard hits, including some late cheap shots by the Miami Hurricanes (don’t get me starter). And if the reports from the fall practices are accurate, the offensive line has made some serious strides and looks pretty solid and have given the QBs time to make their reads and complete their passes. That’s encouraging.

Glennon showed signs of being a consistent, reliable QB during the second half of last season following Taylor’s ankle injury in the Duke game. Glennon was benched in the second game of the season (7-48 loss to LSU) and openly talked about transferring. But, he checked his attitude, ego and pride at the door and went back to work. When T-Mobile went down, Glennon stepped in and finished off the Blue Devils and then went to Georgia Tech, wearing a Yellow Jackets jersey, and played the single greatest game of his career as the Hokies dominated the Jackets.

Those who have followed VTHokieFans.com during the Glennon era know that I’ve often been critical of Glennon. At the same time, when he’s performed well, I’ve given him his due. Reading Kyle Tucker’s blog, it would seem that Glennon had the slight edge over Taylor toward the end of fall practice. According to Taylor (and his dad), had Tyrod declined to redshirt, he would have seen equal playing time. But, what’s done is done. Now, if Glennon can stay healthy and be productive, the Hokies are looking a solid 9- or 10-win season.

  1. Chris Says:

i completely agree i’ve been critical of Glennon when he deserved it, and after the last half of last season he deserves the starting job, i don’t care what anyone says, the Orange Bowl was Stiensprings fault not Glennon’s, hes going to carry us to the ACCCG again this year, he’s got the motivation being his last year, because he’s not an NFL prospect at all and he knows this is it for him, we aren’t gonna see as many mistakes this year from him i can feel it
