At the end of every sports’ season, every coach wants nothing more than for their players to make it through the offseason injury free, so they’re healthy and 100 percent ready for the next season.
For the most part, Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer has seen his team get through this offseason unscathed. A couple of guys needed surgery, but are expected to be back and ready for the start of the 2010 season.
Unfortunately, Beamer wasn’t so lucky. And sadly, neither was his wife Cheryl. Earlier this month, Beamer, who is entering his 24th season at his alma mater, was getting off a plane when his carry-on bag got caught on the railing, pulling Beamer down and rupturing a biceps tendon.
On Tuesday, May 18, the News & Observer reported that Beamer’s wife Cheryl took a nasty fall at the family’s lake house in Georgia. Cheryl apparently tripped over a family pet while carrying one of her grandchildren. According to the News & Observer, Cheryl underwent surgery to have pins inserted in both legs but also suffered six broken ribs and a broken collarbone. Her grandchild was not seriously hurt.
Beamer has cleared his schedule for the immediate future to be with his wife, who remains in the hospital.
