When people originally asked me why I chose VT, I always answered in a memorized order: they had my major, the campus is beautiful, and most importantly, it was in my financial range.
Now I realize something else: Virginia Tech is special. It would be difficult to find another school more spirited than ours. I’ve learned that these people really do bleed maroon and orange; they love their school so unbelievably much and you become a Hokie for life once you enter. It never leaves you. Tech is a community that lifts you up when you fall, that revolves entirely around the importance of service and respect, that has risen from tragedies because of the strength of its heart.
If you’re looking for a school, don’t cross Tech off the list. This past weekend at camp, I watched people stand in front of a campfire and cry, revealing how happy they are now that they’ve seen the kind of friendly, accepting people are within it’s walls, telling us that they can’t wait to be in what they believe is the best school in the world. We were all just strangers a day before. Now we’re Hokies.
It isn’t all about the stats when it comes to schools. We’ve got that. But we also have an unimaginable amount of school spirit, community involvement, and heart. If you need a place to belong, this is where you need to go.
