Renovations to the Ambler Johnston residence hall continue as summer sessions began today. When renovations to East AJ are complete, renovations to West AJ will begin. Once completed, the residence hall will be the first building on Virginia Tech’s campus to meet requirements for U.S. Green Building Council LEED silver certification.

In a 2008 Collegiate Times article about the renovations, then Director of Housing and Dining Services Rick Johnson, who has since left Tech for a similar position at Duke, said of the project:

“LEED certification is the benchmark that all new buildings and renovations are judged against. This building will be the first on the Tech campus that will be LEED certified.”

Construction is expected to be completed May 2013. Learn more about the renovations project by visiting Virginia Tech’s Division of Student Affairs Website.

I sweated out four years at Tech, regardless of the season because the heat in my buildings had two settings; “off” and “fire and brimstone.” When the heat was off, presumably because it was early fall or spring, our “air conditioning” consisted of a box fan in an open window. Kids these days.
