Former Hokie cornerback Stephan Virgil wasn’t selected in the 2010 NFL draft, but he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills. Less than two months later, they cut him.
Virgil was let go on June 8 after failing to impress. It looks like he hasn’t been able to fully recover from the knee injury that kept him out nearly half of the 2009 season. He was slow at the combine, running a 4.69 forty-yard dash and then an even slower 4.73 at his pro day.
At this point, it would be surprising to see Virgil get picked up by another team, but we’ll keep an eye out on the transaction wire. Perhaps he needs more time to rehab and try and get his times down.

As expected, former Virginia Tech Hokie Sergio Render and Stephan Virgil were signed as undrafted free agents today with two NFL teams.

Sergio Render, a four-year starter on the offensive line for Virginia Tech, joins former teammates Cody Grimm and Brent Bowden on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster.
UPDATE – 4/26/2010 – The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Cordarrow Thompson to a rookie free agent contract. The former Hokies defensive lineman will report to a rookie minicamp on Friday, April 30.

Defensive end Jason Worilds (6-1, 254 lbs.) was the first Virginia Tech Hokie to be selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was the 20th selection of the second round (52nd overall) and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kam Chancellor was the next Hokies selected; taken with the second pick in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks. Seven picks later, Ed Wang went to the Buffalo Bills.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted a pair of Hokies in the last two rounds. The Bucs took punter Brent Bowden with the 3rd pick of the sixth round and then picked up Cody Grimm with the 3rd pick of the seventh round.
Sergio Render, who played offensive lineman for Tech, and Stephan Virgil, a former Tech cornerback, were not drafted, but will likely receive invitations to training camps once the draft is completed.
