In the days following the 2010 NFL draft several Hokies who went undrafted signed free agent deals with various NFL teams. Among the former Hokies to sign such as deal was tight end Greg Boone.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted punter Brent Bowden and linebacker Cody Grimm and then signed offensive lineman Sergio Render and Boone after the draft had ended. However, no record of Boone exists in the official NFL transactions wire. Nowhere was he listed as having been signed or cut from any NFL team.
A source inside Virginia Tech’s athletics department said that Boone failed his physical with the Tampa Bay Bucs and was sent home. There’s been no word on what caused the failed physical.
Boone always seemed to be a little banged up because of his aggressive style of play, but he averages 13 games a season for four straight years totally 52 games played and 41 starts.

Apparently Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris is a big Virginia Tech Hokie fan, or at least a fan of the talent that comes out of Blacksburg.
Morris and the Bucs selected two former Hokies in last week’s 2010 NFL Draft: punter Brent Bowden with the 3rd pick in the 6th round and linebacker Cody Grimm with the 3rd pick in the seventy and final round. The following day, the Bucs signed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Sergio Render to a free agent deal.
Then, earlier this week, the Bucs signed defensive end Nekos Brown and tight end Greg Boone to rookie free agent deals.
But Tampa Bay isn’t the only NFL team that seems to think Frank Beamer is turning out NFL-caliber players. The Pittsburgh Steelers, after drafting defensive end Jason Worilds in the second round, signed defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson following the draft and then earlier this week added Thompson’s defensive line mate Demetrius Taylor to their roster.
The Bucs, Steelers and the Buffalo Bills, who drafted Ed Wang and signed Stephan Virgil, will all enter the 2010 training camp season with at least three former Virginia Tech Hokies on their rosters. The Bills already have defensive end Chris Ellis, who was drafted in 2008.

The weekly ACC injury report is out and it looks like senior tight end Greg Boone will play tomorrow against the 19th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. He is listed as probable.
Boone missed the Marshall game with an SC joint sprain (shoulder) after delivering an impressive crack-back block on a Ryan Williams run that set up a touchdown against Alabama. Hopefully Boone will be up for some blocking because the Hokies offensive line will need all the help they can get against Nebraska’s monster defensive line, led by All Big 12 defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
Senior cornerback Stephan Virgil is listed as questionable for the Hokies with a knee injury. Like Boone, Virgil also injured his knee against Alabama and missed the Marshall game. Freshman Jayron Hosley stepped in an played some cornerback against Marshall, but the Hokies will need some help this week. Expect Bud Foster to put a lot of pressure on Nebraska’s inexperienced quarterback and provide a lot of safety help to the corners to help defend against NU’s big receivers.

The Atlantic Coast Conference released its weekly "voluntary" injury report this morning and the Virginia Tech Hokies announced that tight end Greg Boone and cornerback Stephan Virgil are ‘doubtful’ for tomorrow’s home opener against Marshall.
Boone sprained his shoulder throwing a huge block in the Alabama game that eventually set up one of Ryan Williams’ two touchdowns. Virgil injured his knee and missed two straight days of practice this week and will likely sit out tomorrow’s game.

Highlights | Box Score
Blacksburg, VA – Redshirt freshman running back Darren Evans set a new Virginia Tech single game rushing record and led the Hokies to an impressive 23-13 win over the No. 23 ranked Maryland Terrapins Thursday night. Evans piled up 253 yards on 32 carries and scored a touchdown. The 253 yards breaks Mike Imoh’s record of 243 yards set in 2004 against North Carolina.
The Hokies turned in their best offensive performance of the season, racking up 400 yards – 273 rushing, 127 passing. Evans had all but 20 of Tech’s rushing yards. Credit the Virginia Tech offensive line for some great up-front blocking and creating cavernous holes allowing Evans to pick up big chunks of yards. Also, give credit to Bryan Stinespring, Tech’s offensive coordinator, for calling a good game and throwing in some unexpected wrinkles that kept Maryland on their heels all game.
Tech’s offense did most of its damage in the first half posting two touchdowns and a field goal en route to a 17-3 halftime lead. Tech still managed some impressive and time consuming drives in the second half, but only put up two field goals. Glennon finished with a respectable 14 of 20 for 127 yards and one TD.

Got news that Greg Boone, tight end, took snaps at QB during practice today. He did not attempt any passes, only handoffs. More to come as info becomes available. Boone was a prolific high school QB, but converted to TE at Tech.
