Virginia Tech’s Squires Student Center is celebrating its 75th anniversary with an open house on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012.
The original Squires Hall was completed in May 1937 and contained 54,366 square feet. It was named in 1949 for John H. Squires, a 1905 alumnus, who donated $10,000 toward construction of the building.
Squires has undergone two major renovations since it opened. It was closed in 1966 as work began on the surrounding addition and renovation to the original building. It reopened in 1969. Another renovation was completed in 1991 and the building now features more than 200,000 square feet.
In December 2011, it was announced that Squires will see more renovations throughout the building to update some areas and give the facility more of a Hokie flavor overall.
What the what?! Who knew? I guess I never really thought about that brick part of Squires on the second floor was the the original exterior. Man, look at those steps that used to lead up to Squires!
